It allowed him to reach out to people who were like him. I doubt very seriously that he is defined by it at this point in his career. But he found something that made him happy, and for that, I truly see the value here. I personally would never dismiss something that helps so many. Yikes. His apparent emotional attachment to the website is really unsettling. What would happen if he began losing lots of subscribers? Would he become severely depressed?
