Social Media Changes Lives

I was very touched by Shane Dawson’s video. He just hit 1 million subscribers and posted a video about why he does this. I feel it’s awesome that someone who felt so left out now feelsĀ a sense of value in their lives all because they opened up to the world and shared a bit of themselves.

“Youtube changed my life”? Yikes.
His apparent emotional attachment to the website is really unsettling. What would happen if he began losing lots of subscribers? Would he become severely depressed? As someone in the social media marketing industry I see the benefits of social networks, but it’s precarious when your self-perception is defined it.
Social Media picked him up at a point when he was at his lowest. It allowed him to reach out to people who were like him. I doubt very seriously that he is defined by it at this point in his career. But he found something that made him happy, and for that, I truly see the value here.
I personally would never dismiss something that helps so many.
